Geosyntec was retained to provide technical support on the design and implementation of an enhanced in situ bioremediation (EISB) biobarrier for the treatment of chlorinated ethenes in soil and groundwater beneath an active manufacturing facility.
The goal of the project was for Geosyntec to develop implementation plans and design details so that equipment and materials could be procured locally.
Geosyntec’s Scope of Services for an Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation Biobarrier to Treat Chlorinated Ethenes
The use of EISB for treatment of residual sources was not extensive in the European Union. Geosyntec developed a detailed plan so that the client could execute the project. Early investigations indicated extensive soil and groundwater impacts and the biobarrier could not be installed until other off-site activities (namely, the construction of a highway tunnel) were complete. The plume was more than 2,000 feet in length and the downgradient receptor was a river. Challenges included translation of many French documents to English so that site conditions could be understood and ultimately used for the design. Document reviews were completed via web conference and Geosyntec provided detailed specifications for equipment to be procured and sourced locally. Geosyntec completed all of the technical calculations for the work, including stoichiometry, degradation half-life prediction, donor half-life estimates, and groundwater modeling. All documents developed by Geosyntec were then also translated to French for in-country use.

Geosyntec provided support, from North America, for the successful implementation of an EISB remedy at a site in Switzerland. Geosyntec worked seamlessly with an international team of consultants to deliver a complete remedy for this Fortune 500 client.
