Geosyntec is an industry leader in remediating chlorinated solvent impacts to soil, groundwater, and sediments using advanced in situ bioremediation techniques.
Geosyntec provides advanced applications of microbiology-based solutions for the remediation of recalcitrant contaminants in soil and groundwater, particularly those that have proven resistant to conventional remediation technologies or those with comparatively high costs for the application of physical/chemical technologies to achieve similar results. In addition to chlorinated solvents, our practitioners are specialized in the application of enhanced in situ bioremediation (EISB) and bioaugmentation technologies for remediation of perchlorates, metals, and other recalcitrant compounds in groundwater and sediments. They have also pioneered the use of genetic molecular tools for the characterization of the microbial characteristics of environmental media.
Practice Specialties in Specialised In Situ Treatment of Contaminated Soil and Water
Geosyntec is experienced with the implementation of the latest proven technologies through conventional and innovative applications in real world environments bridging the gap between the development and "first-to-field" stages of environmental solutions. For example, our practitioners were key field members of the first pilot-scale groundwater recirculation system where the dechlorinating bioaugmentation culture KB-1® was applied as an in situ remedy to treat groundwater impacted by chlorinated solvents. Subsequent successes with this technology led to growth in the firm's bioaugmentation practice and resulted in more than 300 applications of KB-1® worldwide, including treatment of chlorinated solvent DNAPL source zones. The firm's professionals have decades of experience in advanced applications of microbiology-based solutions for the remediation of recalcitrant contaminants, particularly those that have proven resistant to conventional remediation technologies or those with comparatively high costs. Geosyntec also specializes in the application of in situ technologies using reactive treatment processes such as zero-valent iron (ZVI) and chemical oxidation. We are adept at expediting site investigations, optimizing remediation solutions, reducing remedial programme costs, and accelerating site closure through innovative technology applications.
Advancing the State of the Practice in Specialised In Situ Treatment of Contaminated Soil and Water
Geosyntec scientists have pioneered the use of genetic molecular tools for the characterization of the microbial characteristics of environmental media. Our scientists are also active in applied research and development with the DOD ESTCP and SERDP programs, NASA, the University of Toronto, Cornell, Georgia Tech, and others. Through our active and long standing association with the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC), our senior practitioners collaborate with states and the U.S. EPA to produce guidance documents and training courses for innovative application methods related to remediation of chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant contaminants in groundwater. In Europe, our experts have co-authored remediation and risk assessment guidance documents for the Swedish EPA (Naturvårdsverket) and Danish EPA (Miljøstyrelsen), and delivered training courses for Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Portugese regulators, as well as the Swedish Geological Union. Geosyntec's in-house laboratory and testing facility, SiREM (http://siremlab.com), produces field application quantities of naturally-occurring consortia of microorganisms that target specific recalcitrant compounds and has the genetic testing capability and expertise to demonstrate the efficacy of those consortia in achieving containment reduction targets. Through SiREM, Geosyntec provides these environmental biotechnology services to its own clients as well as the clients of other consultants.
